Former UK Conservative MP Craig Williams and party manager Amy Hind pleaded guilty to gambling offences concerning the 2024 general election. Both admitted to placing wagers on the election date using confidential information derived from their political positions.
The charges relate to Section 42 of the Gambling Act 2005. Williams, the former MP for Montgomeryshire and parliamentary private secretary to Rishi Sunak, utilized sensitive data regarding the election schedule. Hind, who held support roles within the Conservative party and the NHS, accessed similar channels to inform her betting decisions.
Regulatory Findings and Legal Proceedings
The Gambling Commission emphasized that the betting market regarding election timing must not be abused by individuals with inside knowledge. "These two defendants placed bets themselves," the regulator stated. "In doing so, they cheated by using confidential and sensitive information about the date of the 2024 general election in order to profit." Hind faces sentencing at Southwark Crown Court in October, while Williams will be sentenced at a later date.
The regulatory body charged 15 individuals in total. Other defendants include Russell George, the Conservative Senedd member for Montgomeryshire; Nick Mason, the party's chief data officer; Tony Lee, the director of campaigning; and Laura Saunders, the candidate for Bristol North West. Trials for the remaining accused are scheduled between September 2027 and January 2028.
Before the official announcement of the 2024 general election, several betting operators accepted wagers on the specific timing of the vote.
