On November 9, iGEN and SIGMA hosted an industry event at ION Harbour in Valletta featuring three Maltese endurance athletes. The gathering aimed to highlight the charitable fundraising efforts of Fabio Spiteri, Niel Agius, and Steve Sammut Nurminen.
Athlete Profiles and Achievements
The event took place at a Michelin-starred venue overlooking Valletta Harbour. Industry leaders attended to review the physical challenges undertaken by the athletes to support vulnerable members of society. Fabio Spiteri, 49, previously competed for Malta in track events, including the 1999 Liechtenstein Games and 2001 San Marino Games.
Spiteri recently transitioned to triathlons and attempted to complete 10 Ironman events in 10 days during the Brazil Ultra Triathlon. He completed seven events to raise funds for homeless animal shelters before retiring due to injury.
Niel Agius, born in 1986, is a long-distance freestyle swimmer and former Olympian who established his own swimming academy in 2007. Agius holds a world record for swimming 125 km from Linosa, Italy, to Malta in 52 hours. The funds generated from his swims were distributed to families during the pandemic, while his broader work focuses on ocean plastic pollution.
Steve Sammut Nurminen recently participated in the Move For Meals event, completing 394 laps around the University track in Msida over 24 hours to support Soup Kitchen.
In an earlier event, Sammut Nurminen ran the entire length of Malta three times nonstop during the summer.
