The Social Market Foundation has recommended a new tax increase for land-based gaming machines in the United Kingdom. The proposal arrives less than three months after the Remote Gaming Duty rate was adjusted in April.
Proposed Fiscal Measures
The SMF outlined the new levy shortly following the April modification of Remote Gaming Duty, which increased from 21% to 40%. The current recommendation specifically targets physical gaming machines operating within brick-and-mortar establishments.Representatives within the British gambling sector have raised concerns regarding the potential impact of the additional charge. Industry stakeholders warn that the proposed taxation could "put venues and jobs at risk".
The latest recommendation follows the April adjustment of the Remote Gaming Duty framework. That earlier change raised the applicable rate by nineteen percentage points within a single quarter.
